Why divorces occur after eight years

On Behalf of Law Offices of John A. Guthrie | Sep 22, 2023 | Divorce

According to research, the average length of a first marriage is eight years. Those who study the issue believe that this is because couples tend to get bored or restless with their relationships after several years have passed. Of course, there are things that you can do to avoid taking a trip to a California divorce court no matter how long you have been married.

Relationships get boring

The first few months of a relationship are almost always the most exciting simply because you are engaging in something new. Relationships also tend to seem more exciting when you’re accomplishing new things with your partner such as buying a home, getting married or having a child. As you run out of milestones to hit, your marriage may seem like it’s on autopilot, which may cause you to feel like you’re wasting your time.

Your needs will change

One of the reasons why couples tend to feel restless after several years together is that a person’s needs change over time. Therefore, you may be able to avoid a divorce by simply taking stock of what you need now and how your partner can help to meet those needs. For example, you may ask your partner to help out more around the house while you are at work or to schedule more alone time away from the kids.

State law allows you to get divorced for any reason, which means that you can end your marriage simply because you’re bored. Regardless of why you end your marriage, you may receive alimony, child support or other resources from your spouse. You may also be entitled to a portion of any assets that were acquired during the marriage such as the equity in a home or funds in a bank account.
