Tips to help nesting work for you

On Behalf of Law Offices of John A. Guthrie | Sep 27, 2023 | Child Custody

Navigating a divorce brings many challenges. Maintaining a secure and nurturing environment for your children should not be one of them. For some couples, nesting is a way to provide stability and comfort for your child.

There are a few tips to make nesting a more successful venture.

Establish clear boundaries

Successful nesting starts with clearly defined boundaries for both parents. When each parent knows which spaces and areas belong to them in the home, it reduces the risk of conflict or confusion. Not only that, but it also makes it easier to respect each other’s space. Respecting privacy and boundaries helps to create a harmonious living environment for your child.

Maintain consistency

Consistency in routines, rules and discipline becomes easier when your child stays in the same home all the time. Maintaining those routines will help your child adjust to the changes and minimize the upheaval.

Create a shared calendar

Rely on a shared calendar to track not only each other’s time in the house but also school events, extracurricular activities and doctor’s appointments for your children. This minimizes the chances of miscommunication and keeps everyone on the same page.

Share the household chores

Divide the chores in the house to keep the house clean, organized and well-maintained. This shows your children that you can work together even amidst the divorce and keeps the home safe and comfortable.

Successful nesting depends upon both of you working together to reach agreements. Statistics show that fewer than 10% of divorcing couples take their custody agreements to court. Avoid litigation with your custody case and consider a nesting agreement for your children.
