Ways to make the divorce process smoother

On Behalf of Law Offices of John A. Guthrie | Jan 22, 2018 | Divorce

It is common for California couples to make mistakes when they are getting divorced. Some of these errors happen because people do not build up sufficient support networks or because they are bombarded with conflicting information. It is possible, however, to make the process smoother.

People should make certain that they fully understand the financial circumstances of their families. It is a good idea for them in this regard to gather copies of all of the billss, account statements, titles, deeds and other documents. It might be smart to run credit reports on both spouses in order to identify all of the debts that are owed. It may be much easier to gather this information before filing for divorce instead of trying to collect it from the other spouse afterwards.

Divorcing parties should also make certain that they surround themselves with the right people. Instead of listening to friends, acquaintances or even strangers on the internet, they should realize that divorce is personal and should instead talk to therapists and financial advisers to understand their situations and to get support.

When people are looking for attorneys, they should avoid choosing too quickly. It is important for them to find experienced family law attorneys who focus their practice on these types of matters rather than trying to take a one-size-fits-all approach. Good attorneys will listen to their clients and then build a case based on their unique needs and concerns. This may help them to be placed in a better negotiating position so that their interests may be more fully protected. Many cases are resolved without having to resort to litigation.
