Child custody and co-parenting after divorce

On Behalf of Law Offices of John A. Guthrie | Dec 4, 2017 | Child Custody

Divorce can always be a challenge for couples in California, which can be accentuated when an estranged couple has children and will be having an ongoing co-parenting relationship. A strong co-parenting relationship can be essential for the psychological and physical health of the children, and barring situations of abuse or neglect, it is critical for them to retain strong relationships with both of their parents after the end of the marriage. Child custody is an extremely emotionally fraught aspect of a divorce. However, there are some tips and guidelines to help parents preserve their co-parenting relationship and support their children through during and after a divorce.

When parents put their children’s interests first, it can make the sometimes unnecessary flare-ups about co-parenting fade into the background. This is especially true when it comes to minor logistical concerns resulting from shared custody, when a child is constantly shifting from home to home. This custody model may have a number of strong advantages, but it also can place pressures on children, which is crucial for parents to accommodate.

Clear boundaries also can help to support good co-parenting. This means limiting talking to one’s ex to issues about the children while avoiding excessive or stressful interpersonal communication about other aspects of their personal lives. It also can be critical for parents to exercise their negative emotions about the child custody and divorce process with friends or a therapist while remaining positive with their children.

The end of a marriage can be a stressful time for everyone involved, and for a parent considering divorce, child custody can be the main source of anxiety. Someone who is planning to get a divorce can consult with a family law attorney for counsel and representation. A family lawyer can provide representation to support a parent’s claim for custody and protect his or her relationship with his or her kids.
