Three Things You Need To Ask Your Divorce Attorney

On Behalf of Law Offices of John A. Guthrie | Nov 12, 2015 | High Asset Divorce

When considering ending your marriage, you may have several questions about the things that you will need to do to ensure that you are ready to transition into your new life. Asking friends and relatives who have been through a divorce these questions may give you some idea of what to expect, but your divorce will be different. If the answers you receive do not reflect the reality of your situation, you could be placing yourself in an extremely difficult position.

Working together with an experienced divorce attorney is one way to remain in control over your divorce. But, you may never have needed to find a lawyer before, and you may be unsure about how to find the right attorney for you. This posting discusses some of the most important things that you should ask your lawyer before deciding whether or not to work together.

What Is Your Approach To A Divorce Case?

You may have a very clear idea of how you want your divorce to go. Do you want to fight over every single issue? Do you want to find a peaceful resolution that limits the amount of arguments that may arise during the case?

You and your lawyer need to be on the same page regarding your specific needs and concerns. You want to be sure that you are able to achieve your goals throughout the entire divorce, and that you will have the access you require to freely communicate your wishes. If your attorney is a fighter, and you want to work together with your spouse to find common ground, that lawyer may not be right for you. Also, if your case goes into the courtroom, you want to be sure that your attorney has experience as a litigator.

What Do I Need To Know About My Divorce?

In your initial consultation, you should ask some general questions about your specific situation. The attorney will be able to tell you some basic steps that you can take to ensure you are protected throughout the process. This provides you with another opportunity to determine how your lawyer would handle certain aspects of your case. It also gives you the chance to really learn more about the important issues in your divorce. If there is something that is extremely important, say property division or child custody concerns, your attorney may be able to work with you to create a strategy that ensures you are ready for whatever may happen once you file.

What Is This Going To Cost?

Hiring an attorney does require a financial commitment. You want to be sure that you understand exactly what the fees will be so that you can budget accordingly. While this is an important part of the process, do not make this the sole factor in your decision. The right attorney for you might be more expensive that some of the others you have talked to, but you will be able to rest easy knowing that you are working with someone who is committed to your case.
