Custody battle ahead for reality show stars

California fans of the TV show "Southern Charm" may have followed the relationship of co-stars Thomas Ravenel and Kathryn Dennis. They have a 2-year-old and a 7-month-old, and Ravenel has filed a suit against Dennis for custody and visitation rights.

Dennis claims that Ravenel has not contacted her or seen the children in months and has offered her no support. However, Ravenel has countered those claims. He has accused Dennis of blocking his access to the children. He also says that he pays her rent of $3,100 per month and that her six-figure salary means that she is not having financial problems.

According to Ravenel, even his attorney's efforts to contact Dennis about the children have failed. Both individuals wanted the details of the court case sealed to the public, and an initial meeting regarding that occurred on June 8. There will be another hearing on June 27.

Child custody disputes as well as disputes over support may occur during and after a divorce or separation. The best solution for parents is to come to an amicable agreement and to try to work together as co-parents and in the best interests of their children. However, in some cases, disputes arise that cannot be resolved without going to court. Even in an amicable divorce, it is best to make a binding legal agreement regarding custody and support because this provides a baseline for further negotiation. For example, a parent may have a change in work schedule that leads to an inability to fulfill the original custody and visitation agreement. When a change is needed, parents need to return to court to have the agreement modified.
